Chingona, “badass” (feminine), is a Spanish word that traditionally came along with a negative connotation when said. In recent years, Latina women have been taking this word and making it their own, empowering one another. I have been using this word and movement as a source of inspiration for my ideologies of a badass, strong, and powerful woman. The idea of a chingona is just the tip of the iceberg. I think about powerful women’s struggles, their journey, their insecurities, their passions, and other aspects of their lives that may contribute to their badassery. A Chingona is a powerful and strong woman in my eyes. Seeing myself as a Chingona, I dig into my own Mexican-American upbringing, growing up on the border town of Laredo, TX and taking different aspects of my life that contributed to the ideas of a badass woman.
