Sonya Marie Sky is a visual artist who works in painting, drawing, textile, and interactive performance. Her work is a reaction and exploration of the social and domestic Mexican-American cultural constructs that surrounded her. In the solo exhibition Bodily Autonomy, she focuses on identity, femininity and empowerment through life size charcoal drawings that leave the viewer with exterior shells of clothing belonging to the confrontational feminine figures that embody the artist’s ideas of a badass Mexican woman known as a chingona.

Most recently, her interactive impromptu performance Cariñitos places the participants in a playful yet confrontational situation that stages the juxtaposition of innocence and sensual touch and addresses the words of endearment printed on the dress worn during the performance. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Art from Texas A&M International University in the Fall of 2013 and has exhibited her work in Laredo, San Antonio, Arlington and Austin, Texas. She is currently a Master of Fine Arts candidate at the University of Texas at San Antonio and is expected to graduate in the Spring of 2020.
